WHAT IS EMBRACE?

The EMBRACE Online Course and Community was dreamt up and nurtured upon a vision to strengthen and expand the circle of social justice allies in support of issues they care about. The learning experience asks participants, who wish to strengthen their effectiveness as an ally, to unpack their privilege, thereby recognizing it as BOTH A HINDRANCE when left unexamined AND AN OPPORTUNITY for significant impact when understood (i.e deepened self-awareness and skills!) At that point, participants can leverage their privilege with intention and care in community with others.

As a team, we share what we've learned (and things we still need to learn) inside this course. We hope our stories of the journey toward greater impact in social justice offer endless options on your own path! We aim to support the development of allies (accomplices, co-conspirators, change agents - whatever language you prefer!) who have the knowledge, self-awareness and skill sets to recognize when, where and how their efforts are most useful and valuable…AND equally important, when, where, and how they are not!

Intent VS Impact

The creators of EMBRACE are willing to venture the guess that discrepancies of intent versus impact exist in areas of privileged social identities.

Men may be aiming to be allies for women's equality, straight folks believe they are in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, and non-disabled people care about the needs of people with disabilities, among many others. A 2020 survey on allyship* revealed that more than 80% of white employees viewed themselves as allies to people of color in their workplace. On the flip side, 55% of Latinas and 45% of Black women felt they had strong allies at work. When asked who their strongest allies in the workplace were, only 19% of Latinas and 10% of Black women identified white people as their strongest allies. Thus, there appears to be a discrepancy between the intent of white employees in the workplace and the impact of their actions—or inactions.
